Metal Typewriter Spools: A Beginner’s Guide to Choosing the Right Ribbon Spool

Choosing a typewriter spool can seem confusing at first. Metal or plastic? What size? Will it fit your machine?

The good news is that fit matters more than material. But of course we always recommend to use metal spools. So, if your typewriter comes with 1 or 2 metal spools, never throw them away. It is important to keep them and re-wind the new ink ribbon you buy onto the old metal spools.

The three spool measurements

When choosing a spool, pay attention to three dimensions:

(A) Center-hole diameter — the size of the hole that fits over the typewriter’s spindle.

(B) Spool diameter — the overall width of the spool. It must fit inside the ribbon compartment.

(C) Spool height — how thick the spool is. If it is too tall, it may rub against the cover or other parts.

Metal or plastic?

Metal spools

Metal spools are durable, long-lasting and often closer to the original spools used in older typewriters. They are a good choice if you have a vintage machine or want reusable spools.

Plastic spools

Plastic is perfectly fine for most typewriters. They are lightweight, inexpensive and widely available. If a plastic spool fits your machine correctly and works smoothly, that is perfectly fine.

Still - metal spools are a great choice when you value durability, authenticity and vintage looks.

Which spool fits which typewriter?

Typewriter brands such as Olympia, Adler, Hermes, Olivetti, Smith-Corona, Remington and Underwood used different spool sizes across their models.

Even within the same brand, requirements can vary.

The safest method is to identify your exact typewriter model and check its recommended spool size. If you still have one original spool, keep it — it is an excellent reference for size and shape.

Can you use a universal ribbon?

Often, yes. Our universal (half inch or 12.7mm height) ink ribbon comes with 2 plastic twin spools that fit most machines. Choose GR1/GR4 spool depending on your typewriter model.

If the supplied plastic spool doesn't fit your typewriter, you can often transfer the new ribbon onto your original spool.

Bulk ink ribbon (big reels)

If you want to buy bulk ribbon - we also offer 340m cotton or 920m nylon ribbon rolls in standard black or black/red colors. That is much cheaper than buying single ribbons, for example, if you have a collection of typewriters.

Spool lock nuts

Some uncommon typewriter models use a thumb lock nut on top of the spool to make it spin, otherwise they don't work.

Such as some makes of Corona 3, Underwood 3 Bank Portable or Olivetti Lettera 32.

The simple rule

If you're new to typewriters, remember:

1. Identify the brand and model.
2. Check if you have original metal spools. Never throw them away.
3. Find suitable spool that matches the center hole, diameter and height. (contact us for free advice)
